Most sources agree that experiments with non-metal AR-15 magazines have been disappointing.
Steel and aluminum AR-15 magazines seem to perform similarly, with aluminum magazines having a weight advantage.
HK is currently making some very nice, but very expensive, steel AR-15 magazines. In addition to being expensive, these magazines are somewhat difficult to find in stock.
